This privacy policy explains which personal data is processed when you use epfloop.ch, why, and what rights you have. It applies to this website only. For EPFL’s general practices, see the EPFL Privacy Policy.

1. Who is responsible

This website is run by the EPFLoop project of the Distributed Electrical Systems Laboratory (DESL) at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). EPFL is responsible for the processing of personal data described here.

2. What data we process and why

Visiting the website. When you open a page, your browser automatically sends technical data such as your IP address, the date and time, the page requested, your browser and device type, and the page you came from. Our hosting provider records this data in server logs, which are used to deliver the website, keep it secure and detect misuse. These logs are kept for a limited period.

Visitor statistics. We use Independent Analytics, which runs on our own server, to count visits and see which pages are viewed. It does not use cookies or store IP addresses: your IP address is only used to create an anonymous identifier. The statistics are not shared with anyone.

Contact form. When you write to us, we process your name, email address and message, as well as the date and time of sending and your IP address. We use this data only to answer your request. Messages are stored in the website’s database and forwarded by email to the EPFLoop team. We delete them after 12 months at the latest, and IP addresses are removed after 30 days. You can ask us to delete your message earlier at any time.

Cookies. We only use cookies that are necessary for the website to work. Details are in our Cookie Policy.

We do not use your data for advertising, we do not sell it, and we do not create profiles.

3. Service providers and external content

  • Hosting: the website and its database are hosted by Infomaniak Network SA in Switzerland, which processes the data on our behalf.
  • Map: the map on our Contact page is loaded from OpenStreetMap servers (OpenStreetMap Foundation, United Kingdom) and uses a software library delivered by unpkg.com.

To display this external content, your browser connects directly to these providers’ servers, which means they receive your IP address and technical browser data, as with any web request. These providers may process data outside Switzerland, including in the United Kingdom and the United States. Apart from these cases, your data is only disclosed where required by law.

4. Your rights

Under the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP), and the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) where it applies, you can:

  • ask what personal data we hold about you and obtain a copy;
  • have incorrect data corrected;
  • have your data deleted, or object to its processing;
  • withdraw any consent you have given, with effect for the future.

To exercise these rights, contact us or EPFL’s Data Protection Officer using the details above. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Swiss Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC) or, if you live in the EU, with the data protection authority of your country.

5. Security

The website is served only over an encrypted connection (HTTPS), access to its administration is restricted and protected by two-factor authentication, and its software is kept up to date.

6. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy when the website or the law changes. The current version is always available on this page.
